Two researchers from 新沙巴体育网_沙巴体育app-篮球世界杯投注网址推荐, Dr Ntaote Shooto, a senior lecturer within the Biotechnology & Chemistry Department, and Prof Fanyana Mtunzi, Acting Manager for the Institute of Chemical and Biotechnology (ICBT) have been nominated to serve as guest editors for a special issue of Applied Sciences – an open access journal on all aspects of applied natural sciences published semimonthly online by Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI).
Because of their expertise in the field of adsorption, the two will lead the publication of a special issue titled “Application of carbon fibers in adsorption” which will highlight the recent research in carbon fiber composites used in wastewater treatment.?Elated Dr Shooto said: “To be appointed as a guest editor is not only a positive reflection on the individual but also of the department and the university.” He continued, “Postgraduate (Masters and PhD) students are encouraged to engage in research and to submit their research to academic journals. Journal editors can host “meet the editor” sessions for the post-graduate students perhaps those who are towards completing their studies to help these students to become more familiar with high standards and expectations of journals.”
For Prof Mtunzi: “To be nominated is more about recognition of my contribution to research,” he said.
According to the duo, accepted manuscripts under this Special Issue are published in Applied Sciences (impact factor 2.838) and the accepted manuscripts are published immediately after being accepted by the Guest Editors.

Dr. ND Shooto obtained his PhD in 2017. ?His research passion and interest include projects that deal with synthesis of composites based on plant materials impregnated by nanoparticles, with the aim of removing various pollutants such as metal ions, dyes and inhibit the growth of pathogens from wastewater. He has more than 5 years of experience employed as senior lecturer at 新沙巴体育网_沙巴体育app-篮球世界杯投注网址推荐.
As an NRF-rated researcher, he has authored and co-authored over 44 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers including patents and conference proceedings. He is (Y2) NRF rated, this rating is an affirmation of his progress as a researcher and validation of the relevance and quality of his research output. The rating is the recognition of his standing as a researcher, a reputation that is most desirable, it tells his peers at home and aboard, acknowledge that he has engaged in novel, high quality, impactful research that modifies disciplinary thinking and influences policy and practice.
Recognition of his research is evidenced by his papers receiving total of 627 citations and H-index 17. He received several research awards at 新沙巴体育网_沙巴体育app-篮球世界杯投注网址推荐. His research paper titled “Magnetite functionalized Nigella Sativa seeds for the uptake of chromium (VI) and lead (II) ions from synthetic wastewater’’ competed with other research papers worldwide. His paper won article of the year award for 2021 in physical and natural sciences in Adsorption Science and Technology (impact factor 4.373) in Hindawi.
Recently, Dr Shooto received a Rectorate award for teaching excellence for 2022 Academic Year.
MORE ABOUT PROF MTUNZI
Prof Mtunzi obtained his PhD at the University of North-West (UNW) in 2007. He was employed at NWU as a lecturer the same year and moved to 新沙巴体育网_沙巴体育app-篮球世界杯投注网址推荐 in 2008 where he was employed as a Senior Lecturer. Because of his hard and commitment, he was promoted to associate professor in 2019 and in 2022 was elevated to full professor. Prof Mtunzi has published 123 papers and supervised and co-supervised 5 PhD students, and 13 Masters students. He served on several committees including FRIC, senate library committee, chemistry research coordinator and many others. Prof Mtunzi is also an external examiner for several universities and appointed as an external examiner for masters and PhD for numerous universities.
